ABSTRACT

First results of a snowpack observations carried out in Antarctica during the italian scientific expedition in winter 1994/95 are presented here. In a mountainous area of about 50,000 Km2 in the northern Victoria Land, where is located the Italian Base Station, have been performed several conventional snow profiles until variable depths, from a least of some centimetre at a maximum of one metre indulges some situations. Observations have been effected utilizing the classic field instruments. In particular, for every snow profile have been analysed the following characteristics: grain shape and grain size, hardness index, density, liquid water content and snow temperature. Besides, during the travels effected with elicopter, have been executed observations on avalanches activity. Analisis of snow profiles has done clear some characteristics that distinguish the antarctic snowpack from the alpine types. In general, it has been checked a low structural diversification with an alternance of layers of small rounded particles and layers of faceted crystals. Hardness index profiles present on the average shapes of type "quasi-hydrostatic" that confer a relative stability to snowpack. Snow characteristics integrate by climatological analisis of period have consented at last to formulate some hypotesis on the low avalanche activity observed in the region.

ABSTRACT. Even though the danger level verification indicated in the bulletin should be a prioritary aim of avalanche forecast services, there aren't easily applicable verification methods available today. The main difficulty lies in the fact that avalanche observation is no longer sufficient. Therefore, it is necessary to verify the actual condition of the snowpack stability, particulary concerning low danger levels. This work introduces a procedure for "a posteriori" field verification of danger level, both in space and time (24-72h). The method is based on the following elements: avalanche activity survey, observation of backcountry skiers' activity , snow profiles, "Rutschblock" tests. These elements, relating to time and examination zone, are combined in order to provide an objective danger degree according to the European avalanche danger scale. The method was experimented in the winter 1993-94 in the Dolomitic Alps and subsequently, in the winter 1995-96 in the Catalan Pyrenees. As far as 24 hour forecasts are concerned, the methods has shown a forecast reliability of 93% in the Dolomitic Alps and 76% in the Catalan Pyrenees, while 48 hour forecasts have given a value of 89% and 64%, respectively. The lower forecast reliability degree in the Catalan Pyrenees is accounted for by the unusual weather conditions of winter 1995-96, wich was very snowy and characterized by few foreseeable avalanche conditions. The practical application of the proposed verification method has given encouraging results, thus allowing experts to find the main errors in order to improve future forecasts. Howewer, simpler survey procedures are necessary in order to operate on a regional scale. Moreover, the method is suitable for further development relating to the verification of both danger degree and danger localisation.

ABSTRACT

A radiometric and nivologic survey has been carried out in the eastern italian Alps on March, 1996. Reflectance data have been acquired in the spectral range from 350 to 2500 nm along with observation on the physical characteristics of the snow cover. Based on the reflectance data, snow indexes have been computed choosing the wavelenght interval corresponding to Landsat TM spectral channels. The obtained results confirm the ability of radiometric investigation to analyse the characteristics of the snow cover along with the necessity of acquiring a large set of systematic observation at the different environmental conditions.

- data di riflettanza nell'intervallo spettrale 350-2500 nm con uno spettroradiometro Fieldspec;

- dati nivologici lungo il profilo verticale del manto nevoso, comprendenti temperatura, dimensioni e geometria dei grani, morfologia dello strato superficiale e densità;

- misure del contenuto in acqua;

- dati GPS.

ABSTRACT

Field data of snow cover in the region of Ny-Alesund, Svalbard, were acquired in the spring of 1998. In each session of measurements the following data were collected:

- reflectance in the spectral range 350-2500 nm by a Fieldspec spectroradiometer;

- nivologic data including temperature, grain size and geometry, surface layer morphology, density and vertical profile of the snow pack;

- measures of the water content;

- GPS data.

Data were acquired in different locations and targets were recent snow, wind blown snow, pure ice and ice covered by snow with different thicknesses. The combined acquisition of spectral and nivologic data is a further contribution to study albedo variations of the snow cover related to its physical characteristics; the data will be included in a library containing spectral and nivologic data acquired in the polar areas and at mid latitudes.

THE AVALANCHE MONITORING SYSTEM OF MOUNT PIZZAC

ABSTRACT

The monitoring system of Mount Pizzac has been created in order to study the avalanche dynamics and the effect of its impact on the structures.

In its extreme dimensions the monitored avalanche gets off at 2200 meters and stops at 1745 meters, thus following a trajectory of 836 meters with an average gradient of 31°.

The necessary structures for monitoring have been installed in the track of the gully between the above limit of the flowing zone and the central track of the accumulation zone, for a whole length of 418 meters. They allow us to observe the development of the event, thus recording continuously: pressures, speed and geometric variations of the body of the avalanche.

In particular six steel poles, each one fitted out with n. 8 pressure measuring devices (each one with an area of 7850 mm²) allow us to determine the profile of the pressures continually with a resolution of 50 cm up to a maximum height of 5 m. Moreover, five of the six poles placed along the flowing zone of the avalanche are fitted out with measuring devices able to check the flow height, allowing the recreation both in time and space. A small-sized wedge-shaped obstacle (area 1 m²) allows us to estimate the influence of the form and area over the power of the avalanche impact.

Furthermore, knowing the time when the avalanche flow passes by means of sections placed at known distances, it is possible to determine the average speed of the front in 14 tracks of the flow line.

The monitoring system has three cameras which permit us to record the event automatically.

15 events have been recorded since 1993, when the monitoring system was first installed. The avalanches which occured most frequently were wet snow flowing avalanches in springtime and dry snow flowing avalanches in wintertime, with average volumes of 2000 m³. Particularly for average speeds of the avalanche front ranging from 2.5 to 23 m/s, the pressures have recorded variable readings going from 5 to 175 kPa.
